Jacques-Alain Miller’s The Seminar of Barcelona (1996) is a significant text due his sustained elaboration of the symptom throughout Lacan’s teachings. By focusing on the ‘signifier’ and ‘object’ Miller shows continuities and discontinuities is Lacan’s elaboration of the symptom and does so, in part, via a close reading of two Freudian texts in The Introductory lectures on psychoanalysis: The sense of the symptom and The paths to the formation of symptoms.
The Seminar of Barcelona is both a demonstration – a reading of Lacan – and a blueprint announcing Miller’s major theoretical questions and areas of interest, particularly with reference to Lacan’s later teaching, that he will develop over subsequent years.
This three-week seminar will present Miller’s theoretical trajectory and indicate its relevance to clinical and theoretical topics in Lacan’s later teaching concerning jouissance, the Other, knotting of RSI, and the sinthome.
