Once you’ve said it’s an ordinary psychosis, try to classify it in a classical psychiatric way. You mustn’t stop at saying that it’s an ordinary psychosis, you must go further than that and look for what it is in the classical psychoanalytic and psychiatric clinic. If you don’t do that – and this is the danger of the concept of ordinary psychosis – it’s what we call in French an ‘asile de l’ignorance’, it’s a refuge for not knowing.

Jacques-Alain Miller, Ordinary Psychosis Revisited

In this course we explore the concepts of unitary psychosis and foreclosure in Lacanian psychoanalysis via the influence of classical psychiatry on Lacan’s thought and in recent developments in the field of ordinary psychosis. What continuity, if any, is there between unitary psychosis and generalised foreclosure? In the first part, we examine European classical psychiatry from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century to acquaint ourselves with two topics: mild or asymptomatic forms of psychosis and unitary psychosis. In the second part, we examine unitary psychosis and symbolic foreclosure and finally, explore the problematic of generalised foreclosure in the field of ordinary psychosis, in relation to the pluralisation of the Name-of-the-Father, unknotting and jouissance.
