The Lacan Circle of Australia presents Painful Loves, a study day devoted to the pain of loving!

Painful Loves discussed theoretical developments in Lacanian psychoanalysis via discussions of two films – The Banshees of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh, 2022, here) and Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005, here) – with the aim of exploring symptoms that intersect our era and its amorous suffering.

The keynote speaker was the renowned psychoanalyst Russell Grigg, translator of several of Lacan’s seminars. Grigg discussed how these films explore the pain of love and its relation to jouissance, or the traumatic satisfaction of pleasure and pain lying beyond the pleasure principle.

Subsequent presentations were from Jonathan Redmond (psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist), Tony Hughes-d’Aeth (Professor), Laurent Shervington (PhD) and Nick Buckley (clinical psychologist & LCA member). They used these films as a reference point for discussing the discontents of love.
